These can be short one-time meetings or even more longitudinal mentorship.

Briarwood Pastoral Care Team
Official Leader:
Jim Alexander

Description of ministry:
For God's glory, Pastoral Care offers hope and healing through the ministries of personal presence and prayer, especially in times of crises, in order to help people re-engage in worship and re-center their lives in obedience to the Great Commission."  The ministry of personal presence, whether it is through visits, texts, or phone calls when a family member is in the hospital or when they face the loss of a loved one is more meaningful than most understand.  This ministry also gives many gospel opportunities as we share something of Christ's love in both planned and impromptu, God-ordained moments in times of need.

Ways to serve:
• Any man with a bent toward shepherding may become part of this team.  When someone shows interest, Pastor Alexander connects with them to share what the responsibilities and commitment look like. We pray and discern if the Lord is leading them to be part of the team.  As they are being led to serve, we provide formal training to equip them for effective ministry. Additionally, the group meets for monthly lunches for for continual training.
• Selected men are assigned times to be on duty to assist with hospital visitation, follow up phone calls for members going through a time of trial or crisis to reassure members they are being cared for and prayed for beyond their stay in the hospital.

Prayer needs for ministry:
The best way to pray for Pastoral Care is for wisdom that the Holy Spirit might use us effectively to minister personally to those in great need.  Each interaction is a gospel opportunity, whether we are talking with the person in crisis, to their family members, or with others (like doctors and healthcare professionals) who enter their room and the ongoing conversation.

Ways to get more information or sign up:
Visit the Briarwood Pastoral Care Ministry Webpage. Please contact Pastor Alexander at jalexander@briarwood.org or 205-776-5350 (office). Alternatively, you may reach out to the Pastoral Care office by emailing altadenaministries.org or calling 205-776-5227.

L.O.V.E. Ministry
Official Leader:
Darby Travers and Jan Ricketts

Description of ministry:
This is a visitation ministry for our homebound members or homebound loved ones. We meet every Monday morning to arrange flower bouquets (many donated by our congregation and as well as repurposing the floral arrangements used during Sunday morning worship). We then personally deliver these floral arrangements to our homebound contacts, spending time visiting and praying with them. We want to communicate with them that their church family still loves them, values them, and cares for them. We typically visit more than 60 homebound contacts weekly.

Ways to serve:
Women or men are welcome. No prior experience is needed. We can teach you to arrange flowers, or you can simply come for the visitation portion of the ministry. You may also join one of our more experienced members to do visits with them if you are uncomfortable making a social visit alone. You do not need to commit every week. Some members come monthly or at other time intervals. We would love you to join when you can. Donations of flowers to the ministry are welcome.

Prayer needs for ministry:
• Please pray that we would have enough volunteers that every homebound member could be visited each week. Please pray that we would be the aroma of Christ when we walk in a member’s door, and that the people we visit feel loved and valued as Christ loves the church.
• Please pray for the members of our congregation who are nearing heaven, that they would finish well.
• Please pray for those who go out and visit that they would be blessed and encouraged by the visitation and be encouraged by the homebound member.
• Please pray that the Gospel would go out through this ministry as some visitations are to those who do not know Christ.

Local Missions at Briarwood is committed to reaching the Birmingham metro area for Christ by sharing the gospel through evangelism, discipleship, leadership training, church planting, and practical acts of service. A key priority is mobilizing Briarwood members to actively engage in this mission, using their gifts to impact the city with the hope of Christ.

Ways to serve:

Prayer needs for ministry:
• Pray for wisdom, creativity, and passion for our team in reaching Birmingham for Christ by deepening and developing key ministry partnerships.
• Pray that we would be strategic in mobilizing Briarwood members that are not engaged in ministry and that we would do it in a way that would help people use their time, gifts, and passions so that they can fulfill the good works that Christ has prepared in advance for them.
