Summer Quarter
June 7 – August 30 • 9:30–10:30 a.m.
The purpose of Briarwood’s Sunday School Community Ministry is to consistently teach the whole counsel of God in the context of our congregational communities, encourage the fellowship of believers, and build disciples by equipping Christians to make an impact for Jesus Christ—beginning in the home and church and moving to Birmingham and beyond.
Let us help you find the right Sunday School Community for you! Call us at 205-776-5208 or drop by the Membership Office within the Church Receptionist office.

COLLEGE / SINGLES / YOUNG COUPLES
College Community
College-age • W-202
“Pilgrims on the Way” • We will journey as pilgrims along the way as we systematically exposit the Psalms of Ascent. Ultimately, we will see that Christ is the perfect pilgrim who walked the path before us and will reflect on our own spiritual pilgrimage as we seek to be more like Him. Teacher: Chase Roberson. Team Leaders: Browns, Caroline Carlisle, Russells. CP: Mark Purser. SP: Benny Parks.
Graduates & Career
A community for graduates to early 30s • (M-202)
“No Greater Love” • In John 15:13, Jesus says to his disciples, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” It’s striking that in Jesus’ estimation, the greatest expression of love is not the love between family, or the love between husband and wife, but the sacrificial love that one shows for his friends. We’ve all experienced friendship at different stages of our lives and in various forms, and yet rarely do we pause and intentionally reflect upon what friendship is. We invite you this quarter to do exactly that, as we examine what Scripture has to say about the bond that C. S. Lewis once described as “the greatest of all worldly goods.” Teacher: Saeyoung Park. Team Leaders: Gathings, Gewins, Moores. CP: Saeyoung Park. SP: Benny Parks.

“Job”
• Likely the oldest and perhaps the most unsettling book of the Bible, the Book of Job takes on the subject of a believer’s suffering like no other Old or New Testament scripture. It raises questions about the reality of evil and suffering and provides answers about how the believer should and should not respond, and how we can come alongside others as they endure adversity and anguish. It reveals how God confronts our questions and provides comfort as He alone can give. Teacher: Mark Travers. Team Leaders: Cawoods, Leibs, Meredith Peters. CP: Ryan Leib. SP: Bob McGregor.
Family Life
A class for the entire family • (W-203)
“Westminster Confession of Faith” • In this study we hope to learn about the summary of the doctrinal beliefs of our church. This will answer the questions: Who am I? Where did I come from? Why am I here? Where am I going? How should I live my life? How do I find peace and happiness? And much more. Our hope is that this will be a practical course, showing how our basic doctrines relate to everyday life. Teacher: Bobby Parks. Team Leaders: Belyeus, Maces. CP & SP: Bobby Parks.
Growing in Grace
Families with preschool to high school-age children • (E-005)
“The Attributes of God” • In order to worship God rightly, we need to understand who He is in all of His perfections as revealed in Scripture. This class is focused on the development of those attributes drawing from the theological works of A.W. Pink, Charles Hodge, John Gerstner, and R.C. Sproul. Teacher: Paul Cleveland. Team Leaders: Bakers, Marshalls, Martins, McClurkins. CP & SP: Benny Youngblood.
Heritage Builders

Sojourners
Families with preschool to college-age children • (E-007/009)
“Caring for One Another” • The care of souls is what the church is about. By His Word and Spirit, Jesus comforts and counsels us in our troubles, so that we may comfort and counsel others in their troubles. Indeed, the most wonderful community imaginable is a church in which each of us is learning to care for one another by offering His true words wrapped in His loving ways (Ephesians 4:11-16). This series will draw from Scripture the essential skills for fulfilling this mission; even better; it will help you put these skills into practice within your everyday relationships. Teacher: Greg Norfleet. Team Leaders: Blacks, Brunsons, Cains, Crowes, Greenes, Morrises, Stevens, Tidmores. CP & SP: Benny Youngblood.
Growing Together
Families with preschool to college-age children • (G-103)

Kingdom Seekers
Families with children in high school and older • (E-003)
“Missional Living” • Missional Living from the Life and Teachings of Jesus. This quarter we will explore how Jesus lived and what He taught. His obedience to the Father resulted in the Kingdom of God transforming those He engaged. The Great Commission is the task given to all disciples of Jesus. Teacher: Bryan Wintersteen. Team Leaders: Carters, Chappells, Greenes, Ricky Moore, Steven Peters, Russ Ponder, Steelmans. CP: Rob Genin. SP: Bobby Parks.
Next Step
Families with children in high school or older • (E-010)
“From Womb to Tomb” • Developing a Biblical View of Human Life. Life issues often catch us by surprise, whether it’s in a conversation about current issues or in our personal lives. This class is designed to prepare you for some of life’s most important and complex decisions both biblically and practically. These include abortion, fertility, gender/sexuality, aging and more. This class examines human life issues from “womb to tomb.” Teachers: Howard Eyrich, Eric Johnston, Ike Reeder, Greg Thompson and others. Team Leaders: Glenn Green, Chuck Powell, Mark Thompson. CP: Greg Norfleet. SP: Bobby Parks.
Inside Out
Families with children in high school or older • (FH-C)
“Christ and Culture” • Every Christian lives inside a culture, shaped by the work we do, the stories we hear, and the assumptions of the age. This class asks what Scripture says about the world God has placed us in—and what He has called us to do with it. Over twelve weeks, we will work through a biblical theology of culture from a Reformed perspective. We will begin in Genesis with the cultural mandate, trace it through the covenants and the work of Christ, and end by looking honestly at the cultural movement we are living in today and what it means to engage it faithfully as the people of God. Teacher: Ike Reeder. Team Leaders: David Harris, Mike Mungenast, Tripp Reid, Scott Summers. CP & SP: Bobby Parks.
REAL Matters
Families with children in high school or older • (S-209)
“Elijah” • Elijah: Serving Christ in a contrary culture. From the book of I Kings, we will learn how God uses His prophet Elijah to point us toward His provision in Christ for living in a very contrary culture. Teacher: Mark Cushman. Team Leaders: Hursts, Marvin Keffer, Scotts, Warlicks. CP & SP: Bobby Parks.
Hearts and Homes
A community for 50’s and up, both couples & singles • (A-202)
“And I Will Show You a More Excellent Way” • In the book, Charity and Its Fruits, Jonathan Edwards states, “All virtue that is saving and that distinguishes true Christians from others is summed up in Christian Love.” This will become clear from our study of I Corinthians 13. Teachers: Benny Parks & Christopher Frost. Team Leaders: Gazzinis, Salmons, Smedleys, Smithermans. CP: Bobby Parks. SP: Wright Draper.
Discovery
A class for all ages and stages in life • (FH-A)

Teacher: Jim Carlson. Team Leaders: Dobnikars, Donaldsons, Mooneys, Towneses. CP: Jim Alexander. SP: Wright Draper.
Kingdom Builders

Teacher: Larry Holley. Team Leaders: McRaes, Zachows. CP & SP: Wright Draper.
Mountain View
A class for all ages and stages in life • (A-209)
“The Way Things Really Are” • Reformed systematic theology is the orderly distillation of the truths taught in the Bible. There also exists a coherent and well-developed biblical world view that squares with Scripture. We will synthesize these two into a “majority report” of historical orthodox protestant Christianity. From truth and revelation springs the correct view of everything. Don’t let yourself be fooled by the world. Teacher: Ken Friday. Team Leaders: Adamses, Blackmons, Goebels, Hedricks, Lindsays, Merrells, Rosses. CP & SP: Dave Lewis.
Deeper Life
Empty nesters through great-grandparents • (Chapel)
“Introduction to Isaiah” • This summer we will engage in an introductory series on the prophetic ministry of Isaiah. Sixty six chapters of material sound a bit daunting, does it not? But don’t assume that we will attempt to tackle all of this corpus in so short a time. Instead, we will focus our attention on select chapters and themes that shape the whole: the call of Isaiah, the holiness of God, judgement against sin, redemption from slavery, and hope in the new heavens and new earth. Teacher: Wright Draper. Team Leaders: Al Black, Blacks, Blounts, Craigs, Bill Fox, Joyce Ann Jackson, Bill Kendall, Rick Lathem, Lee McCarty, Bill Moulton, Bill Rudd, Barbara Ryals, Wes Willis, Greg Wolchok, Woodalls. CP: Chuck Morgan. SP: Wright Draper.
Abundant Life
Empty nesters and grandparents • (G-101)

Homestead
Empty nesters through great-grandparents • (FH-E&F)
“From Womb to Tomb” • Developing a Biblical View of Human Life. Life issues often catch us by surprise, whether it’s in a conversation about current issues or in our personal lives. This class is designed to prepare you for some of life’s most important and complex decisions both Biblically and practically. These include abortion, fertility, gender/sexuality, aging and more. This class examines human life issues from “womb to tomb” and into eternity. Teachers: Howard Eyrich, Eric Johnston, Ike Reeder, Greg Thompson and others. Team Leaders: Bill Armistead, Doug Dickinson, Huffs, Whaleys, CP & SP: Wright Draper.
Joyful Hearts
Empty nesters through great-grandparents • (A-105)
“The Book of Job” • “You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.” As we reflect on these words from James 5:11, most of us don’t have much difficulty appreciating Job’s perseverance in his trials. But we do often struggle to see and appreciate God’s purposes in our own suffering and to believe that even in hard places in life God is still demonstrating His heart of mercy and compassion toward us. This quarter we’ll study the life of this remarkable man and what happened to him. We’ll listen in to hear from Job’s heart and hear the counsel of his friends. Most importantly, we’ll hear what the Lord says to this faithful sufferer. Along the way, we’ll take a few detours to look at a theology of Satan and how the book of Job points to Jesus and the gospel. Teacher: Drew Ricketts. Team Leaders: Shaws. CP & SP: Wright Draper.
Women Impacting the World
Women of all walks and stages of life • (A-205)
“The Word of Truth” • In these lessons we will examine the difference between the word of truth and false teaching. We will look at how error often sounds spiritual, moral, and even religious, while quietly undermining the gospel of grace. Teacher: Vicki Portis. Team Leaders: Donna Arrington, Tricia Corbett, Vicki Portis, Helen Pruet. CP & SP: Dave Lewis.
International Community
English-speaking internationals • (E-218, School Library)
“The Life of King Solomon” • This 12-week series will trace the life of King Solomon. We’ll follow his rise to the throne, his prayer for wisdom, the building of the temple, the peace and prosperity of his reign, and his slow drift into compromise and idolatry that fractures the kingdom. Solomon’s story is one of the Scripture’s most sobering portraits of extraordinary promise, giftedness, success, and divided devotion. It is not merely a cautionary tale, nor merely a model of wisdom – it is an account of glory and collapse that points beyond Solomon to Christ, the greater Son of David, the true wisdom of God, whose kingdom cannot fall and whose heart is wholly devoted to the Father. Teacher: Joseph Matsiko. Team Leaders: Ken Kelso, Ann Lindsey, Stephen Merwin, David Morgan, Neills, Miriam Rueger. SP & CP: Bryan Wintersteen.
