A Ministry of Briarwood Presbyterian Church

ABOUT OUR MINISTRY

The Special Connections Ministry is a special place where children to adults with disabilities participate in Sunday School lessons, sing hymns, and practice social skills to grow their faith in Jesus! Using 21st century instructional strategies, the Special Connections Ministry staff make the Gospel accessible to children, youth, and adults with disabilities.

Our goal is to make it possible for familes to fully participate in worship services and Sunday School by providing a Christ-centered, safe, and nurturing environment for their family member who has a disability.

Michael Johnson, Special Connections Director

After studying Social Science with an Emphasis in Secondary Education at Hope International University, Michael became a special education teacher in his home state of California. He later moved to Birmingham to work at inner-city schools, where he then sensed a call to work at Briarwood. Beginning in 2022, he has been evangelizing and discipling our participants with Special Needs through introductory videos, worship music, and hands-on Sunday School lessons. He enjoys engaging the parents and caregivers of the participants by hosting Father’s and Mother’s Dinners. Michael is married to his high school sweetheart, Amanda, and together they have two daughters.

Special Connections Resources

Church Connections:
We help people with disabilities and their families have many opportunities for worship, learning and building relationships with others. Our classes and inclusion program help children, youth and adults with disabilities to grow spiritually and socially with one another and with typically developing peers. Our home base on Sundays is Room N-110 for all worship services and Sunday School. Care is also provided during other times, for church Bible Studies, special events, etc.
Community Connections:
We provide many opportunities for building relationships and developing abilities with Women’s Fellowship events, Respite Care for caregivers, Summer Activities (summer camp sessions, VBS, and more), Family Services for encouragement, practical support, social and recreational activities for all family members.
Resource Connections:
We strive to provide resources to families touched by disability. We can help provide referrals to physicians, therapies, counseling, etc. who are experienced in helping people with disabilities and consultation with churches in developing disability ministry. Please reach out to us for additional resources.
