EVERY MEMBER COMMITMENT
As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace. 1 Peter 4:10
On a recent evening, my head was swimming. Thoughts of current global conflicts, potential wars, and our upcoming presidential election circled my mind.
As I started my bedtime routine, I had a realization. I was carefully opening the door to each of my children’s rooms to make sure they were sleeping soundly. As I was praying over them, the worry and anxiety connected to circumstances outside of my house and outside of my control immediately ceased.
I realized I am not called to be a steward of national or global affairs. I am called to be a faithful steward of the treasures that God has entrusted to me and my wife: including our children.
While God has not called me to “manage or look after” (as one dictionary defines stewardship) global events and elections, He has called me to pray for our leaders and those in authority. 1 Timothy 2:1-2 says, “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions.”
This year, as we focus on the Foundations of Stewardship, I am seeking to go back to the basics. I’m focusing on being faithful with the time, talent, and treasures God has entrusted me with. I aim to be less focused on the things outside my control while remembering that God is sovereign. His son, Jesus, is the King of kings and Lord of lords who has all authority in heaven and on earth. When we are tempted to give into anxiety and despair over the very real issues that are outside of our control, let’s quickly place these into the able hands of Jesus and return our focus to the things we are called to faithfully steward.
