BRIARWOOD BALLET
Forty-five years ago, my beautiful mama, Barbara Barker, began the Briarwood Ballet. It started with a handful of girls, makeshift barres, and two nursery rooms. Since then, thousands of dancers have come through our program, and God has brought us an amazing staff. Thanks to the gifts and sacrifices of the congregation, Briarwood has provided us with beautiful, state-of-the-art facilities.
What the students have learned in these classrooms goes far beyond their knowledge of ballet. Especially during this time of year, those beautiful studios become a training ground for life lessons these dancers will never forget! I guess instead of boot camp, I’d call it a Christian pointe-shoe camp!
Countless hours (and blisters) have gone into preparing for our upcoming Christmas concert. Mama’s vision for this ministry was to use ballet to share the gospel-- not just with our students but with our audiences as well. Forty-five years later, our commitment has not waivered from this vision. We still strive to teach each dancer that their body is created to be a temple of the Living God, and as a result, our movement should be motivated by the worship of our Savior.
As you can imagine, when you have so many students working daily on a gospel-driven project, the enemy is close at hand! Multiple times, I heard Mama tell our students, “Satan can do nothing but build a stage on which God can do a greater miracle!” And, so many times, we watched in amazement as God answered our desperate cries for help.
This Christmas, we are working to produce a worship concert entitled, O Come Let Us Adore Him. My prayer is that as our dancers celebrate the birth of our Savior, the congregation will also experience a richer glimpse of God’s indescribable gift.
I hope that you will come adore Him with us... and bring your friends!
